If you're planning senior pictures in Omaha, you're probably wondering what to wear, what to bring, and how to make sure everything goes smoothly on photo day.

After photographing hundreds of seniors throughout Omaha, Papillion, Gretna, Elkhorn, Millard, Bellevue, and the surrounding areas, I've learned that a little preparation goes a long way. The seniors who feel the most confident during their session aren't necessarily the most comfortable in front of a camera. They're simply the ones who come prepared.

This guide will walk you through exactly how to prepare for your Omaha senior photo session, from choosing outfits and locations to handling Nebraska weather and making the most of your experience.

When should you schedule your senior photos in Omaha?

I can’t start the checklist without addressing one of the biggest mistakes I see seniors make; waiting too long to book their session.

Summer and early fall are the most popular times for senior pictures in Omaha because of the warm weather, green landscapes, and beautiful evening light. Many of the best dates fill months in advance.

If you're hoping for:
• Flowers and lush greenery, consider late spring or early summer.
• Golden fields and warm colors, late summer or early fall is ideal.
• Fall leaves are a bit unpredictable, but mid October is usually the time for prime color in Omaha.
• Snowy winter portraits, plan ahead and stay flexible with weather.

I recommend reaching out 6-12 months before you'd like your session so you have the best choice of dates and locations. If you’re ready to get started, please reach out today!

This Photographer’s Favorite Locations in Omaha for Senior Photos

One of the most exciting parts of planning your senior session is choosing the perfect location! Fortunately, Omaha has no shortage of beautiful spots that can help showcase your personality and style.

Some of my favorite locations for senior pictures include Walnut Creek, with its tall grasses, garden, trees, water views, and natural scenery; Chalco Hills, which offers tall grass and beautiful water views; The Old Market, perfect for seniors who love an urban vibe with brick streets and unique architecture with a ton of variety; and Gene Leahy Mall, which provides a modern downtown look with stunning city views, green spaces, and a bunch of beautiful landscaping.

The best part? These are just a few of the many amazing locations available for senior photos in Omaha. When you book your session, you'll receive access to my exclusive location guide and interactive Google Map filled with even more hidden gems, location tips, and real session photos to help you choose the perfect backdrop for your senior portraits.

1. Choose Your Outfits in Advance

Your clothing sets the tone for your photos, so pick outfits that truly reflect your personality and style.

✔️ Choose 2-4 outfits for variety, one that’s casual, one that’s dressier, and maybe one that ties into your hobbies or future plans.
✔️ Stick to solid colors or subtle patterns, busy prints or logos can be distracting.
✔️ Make sure your clothes are clean, wrinkle-free, fit well and are weather appropriate. No one likes sweating during their photos!
✔️ Bring layers (like a jacket or cardigan) for extra options.
✔️ Don’t forget shoes that match, yes, they will show in some shots!

Overall, choose outfits you feel comfortable and confident in! If you love what you’re wearing, it will show in your photos! Looking for more about what to wear? Check out my Blog about What to Wear for your Senior Photos in Omaha!

2. Grooming & Self-Care Tips

Looking and feeling your best starts with a little prep work.

✔️ Haircut? Get it about a week before your session so it looks natural. If you want to try something new, be sure to give yourself plenty of time for it to grow out in case you don’t like it!
✔️ Shave or groom body and/or facial hair a day or two before (if applicable).
✔️ Stay hydrated and follow your normal skincare routine—glowing skin starts from within!
✔️ Nails matter! You don’t have to go all out, but clean, trimmed nails (or neutral polish) make a difference.
✔️ Avoid trying new skincare, hair products, or tanning right before your session; trust me, you don’t want any last-minute surprises.

Good news …. If you’re worried about breakouts, don’t stress! I can retouch minor blemishes so you can relax and just enjoy your session.

3. Plan for Hair & Makeup (If You Want It!)

Your photos should feel like you, so whether you go natural or glam, the key is to enhance your natural beauty, not hide it.

✔️ Keep makeup simple and polished, avoid heavy shimmer or SPF-based products that reflect light.
✔️ Bring oil blotting sheets or powder to reduce shine, especially on warm days.
✔️ Pack a hairbrush, bobby pins, and hairspray for quick touch-ups.
✔️ Consider professional hair & makeup if you want an extra polished look, it can boost confidence and make a big difference in photos!

If you wear makeup daily, stick to a slightly enhanced version of your usual look. If you never wear makeup, now’s not the time to try a dramatic new style, let’s keep you feeling like YOU! Simply use a tinted BB or CC cream to even out your skin and maybe add a little mascara or simple lip gloss for a put together look!

4. Gather Any Props or Accessories

Adding a personal touch makes your photos even more meaningful.

✔️ Bring sports gear, instruments, books, or anything tied to your passions.
✔️ Hats, sunglasses, scarves, or jewelry can add style without being distracting.
✔️ If you want pet photos, bring a leash, treats, and a helper for your pet (because fur babies deserve a spot in your session too!).
✔️ Consider bringing a college sweatshirt or something representing your next big step.

Think about what defines you right now, your senior photos should tell your story in this moment!

5. Pack an Essentials Bag

A little prep goes a long way! Pack a small bag with:

✔️ Lip balm and extra makeup for touch-ups.
✔️ Hair ties, bobby pins, and a brush.
✔️ Comfortable shoes for walking between locations.
✔️ Water and snacks (staying hydrated is key, especially for outdoor shoots).
✔️ A few towels for dewy grass, dirty benches and to put in car windows while changing.

Having these items on hand means you won’t have to worry about anything except enjoying your session!

6. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

It sounds simple, but rest is the best beauty trick! Being well-rested helps you look refreshed and feel energized.

✔️ Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before.
✔️ Stay hydrated in the days leading up to your session. 6-8 glasses a day is a great goal, and bring a water bottle for your session!
✔️ Eat a light meal before your session so you’re not hungry but still comfortable.

If you’re feeling nervous, do something relaxing the night before; watch a movie, take a bath, or listen to your favorite playlist to unwind. And remember, you can trust me to give you all the fun posing and photo prompts, so no need to stress over how to pose or what to do with your hands!

7. Know Your Location & Timing

As your photographer, I will help you create a timeline that helps you fit in everything you want, including travel time and changing time, so you don’t need to worry. This is what you can do to make sure things go smoothly the day of your session.

✔️ Confirm where and when your session is happening. See above for some great location ideas!
✔️ Plan to arrive 10 minutes early to get settled.
✔️ Check the weather, Omaha can be unpredictable, so be ready for changes! If I’m concerned about weather, I will contact you on the day of your session to discuss rescheduling options.
✔️ If we’re shooting in multiple locations, bring everything you need for outfit changes.

If you’re unsure about a location, let’s chat! I can help pick a spot that fits your style and personality.

8. Relax, Have Fun, and Be Yourself!

The best omaha senior photos happen when you’re comfortable, relaxed, and having fun.

✔️ Don’t stress about posing, I’ll guide you the entire time!
✔️ Laugh, move, and be natural, candid moments are often the best.
✔️ If you feel awkward, that’s totally normal! It takes a few minutes to warm up, and that’s okay.
✔️ Trust the process, your personality will shine through in every shot!

The best advice I can give? Embrace the moment. This is such an exciting time in your life, and your photos should reflect that joy and confidence.

Your senior year is filled with unforgettable moments, and your senior photos should be one of them! Senior Photos aren’t just about getting great pictures, it’s about capturing your personality, style, and everything that makes you you.
